Last term my science class and I took a trip to Opua to investigate our native organisms and also discovered other types of species that don't belong to our moana. We collected lots of different samples by going out on the dingy and walking around on the beach. I've found using the torpedo a lot easier than the net but the net picked up a lot more organisms than the torpedo did. I was surprised by the amount of organisms that are in our ocean that you can't even pick up with your own eyes but as soon as you put it under the microscope you'll be able to identify what species the organisms are.
I was actually interested in one of the jobs one of the teachers was doing while we were on the boat. She was going around the ocean on the dingy collecting data samples to test what type of organisms were in our ocean so were able to identify the species we've discovered or not yet. I enjoyed when we gathered all types of samples of DNA and discovered a lot of plankton and other types of species. I really never thought about how many species there are around us and in our ocean , it really made me think about discovering new species around our ocean. I appreciate this program and the people teaching us all these interesting facts about the ocean I never knew about.
